Dapper fashion

After a “Mad Men” marathon it’s hard not be infatuated with all the dapper fashion.  Joan Holloway (Christina Hendrix) makes embracing your hips and all the curves of a woman’s body so sexy.  In honor of the fabulous fashion we’ve put together an outfit worth half the price of what you would find at those big retail stores.

During one of my visits to Ross (YES dress for less) I found an emerald green knee length dress with a train.  What I really liked about the sleeves is that I can roll them up to a quarter sleeve or I can roll them down, instantly turns the look from a day dress to a night look.  To enhance the emerald green I chose brown as the secondary color pairing the look with brown vintage heels, brown paper button earrings and lastly a green faux leather cuff with a gold embellishment, voila!  I must say the outfit was a big hit and definitely brought my inner “Joanie” out!

Birthday Suit

Image

Eye am back.  So from the last post to now a lot has happened…I celebrated another year of life, conquered some challenges AND new accessories for the summer have arrived at Queen B!  First I would like to start off with going into detail about my BIRTHDAY SUIT!

Image

It was my special day (6/3) so I wanted to look extra special.  Here in California the weather is always sunny and warm, so I went with a light brick colored pleated dress.  White poppy flowers stamped all around made me feel fresh and ready for a new beginning, another year of life, another opportunity to live life to the fullest.  I wanted to keep the look vintage “a la Betty” so I paired it with my favorite leather chunky heel shoes (super comfy by the way best pair of heels ever!!)  I decorated the look with Queen B accessories starting with a camel colored faux Cord Leather Suede Necklace mixed with gold accents and a gold tassel.  I couldn’t leave behind the new wrap around bracelets with tiny diamonds all around (limited quantity.)  Lastly to complete the look one of our new arrivals are these cute summer hand bags which we’ve decorated with hand crocheted flowers (custom made: size & color order your today).  What is specially neat is that the hand bags can be used for decorative purposes, shopping etc.  And this my friends was my birthday suit.  Cheers to the dirty thirties 😉

SKIN CARE 101: EXFOLIATE

Image

We’ve all seen those jars loaded with relaxing scented salts (or sugars) in the beauty aisle that promise radiant and youthful skin.  But how is that possible?  How can ingredients that belong in your kitchen promise such results?  Well I set off to find out the benefits of exfoliating and to my surprise decided to create my own scrub!  Available at fb.com/queenbxssories or you can email me directly at queenbxssories@gmail.com

Why do I need to exfoliate?

If you want your skin to look radiant and healthy consider exfoliating on a regular basis.  When you exfoliate you are removing the top layer of dead epidermis cells.  This will make the surface of your skin smooth, helps prevent breakouts/pores (when exfoliating the neck & face area) and reduces the appearance of brown spots.  As we age out skin begins to wrinkle in certain areas more than others so exfoliating will make your skin appear smooth and less wrinkled.

*for all those who like to apply self-tanner exfoliating will allow the tan to be more even.

Where can I exfoliate?

Some body parts are more sensitive than others so typically you want to focus on your hands, feet, body and face.  Keep in mind that you DO NOT want to use a scrub you use for your feet on your face, naturally your face is more sensitive.

-By exfoliating your body this allows your moisturizer to penetrate your skin to give you a nice constant glow.  Dr. Schultz recommends exfoliating your body every day to eliminate build-up. (dailymakeover.com)

-Exfoliate your hands…often.  Since our hands are in constant motion, being washed, typing, cooking etc it is difficult to keep your hands from aging.  So for those reasons you want to make sure to exfoliate and apply lotion (lotion with alpha or beta hydroxyl acids will continue the exfoliating process because the acids further abrade and remove dead skin cells.)

-Our face is the first thing the world sees.  With the changing times we expose our face to the harshest conditions time extreme cold, heat, chemicals etc.  Consider using gentle non chemical products, your face will thank you!

I have dry skin; wouldn’t exfoliating be harmful?

Dr. Schultz (www.dailymakeover)recommends that “while parched skin may feel sensitized, it’s actually a good idea to exfoliate.”  The reason for that is that glycolic acid removes cells on the surface that prevent water from absorbing into the skin, make sure to apply a strong moisturizer after exfoliating to lock in hydration.

What shall I look for in an exfoliate?

Opt for grainy types of cleansers to clean the skin, rather than soap. Choose exfoliating cleansers that contain ingredients such as oatmeal, ground almonds or even sea salt. The grainy texture exfoliates the skin.  Queen B Salt Scrubs are custom made with all natural & organic products.  Nothing but pure goodness for your skin.  Ask for your free sample.

California Love.

This past week my family from Utah came to visit and I had an opportunity to show them around the city of Los Angeles!  I took them to explore hidden gems in and around the city like the downtown Historic Bank district, The Last Bookstore, The Placita Olvera to our fun beaches-Venice and Santa Monica promanade.  I wanted to make sure I looked my best yet comfy for my special guest in my grand city!!

As usual the forecast predicted sunny skies all week so I kept my outfit light yet fashionably cute in my L.A. gear.  All in all it was an awesome week and I love showing off my city. That’s California Love. Come visit!!

The 5 gifts mom WANTS for Mother’s Day

image

1. Pamper Mom. Show your appreciation with an at home (or a professional spa) mani & pedi session. Play her favorite tunes light some candles and spend some mother-daughter time. I personally like to make a little basket of goodies for mom to keep long after mothers day, I include Queen B handmade salt scrubs for exfoliation, her fav lotion “Genes,” some soft slippers etc) Those are the lasting memories you’ll both cherish.

2. Personalized gifts. Perhaps handmade, something significant would bring a smile to moms face. Think originality. My mom (& ALL the other mamacitas interviewed agreed 100%) emphasized on NO HOME APPLIANCES!

3. Time. Plain and simple. Moms rather you spend quality time with them than any gift out there!

4. Dinner. This one mom will either LOVE it or HATE it. Unless reservations have been made prior most restaurants are hectic and overcrowded. Spare mom the headache and plan ahead. Call her favorite restaurant and make reservations. She’ll sure be proud to be your mom!

5. Lastly mom will never turn down gifts like jewelry, purses or a shopping spree. We’ve got to keep our moms looking and feeling great!

fashionably late…birthday wishes

This past weekend I took a quick trip to the San Francisco Bay area for my “baby” nephews birthday.  Rex is his name and that cute ball of energy and light turned 3 years old.  It is amazing how a little being is reason enough to gather family from all over the states even if it’s just for a weekend.  I knew I wanted to wear something super special for my nephews big day and I needed something that was appropriate for a “kid party.”  Things to keep in mind: there will be little ones running around, if the location is at a park you want to make sure you wear the right shoes (no stilettos since they will dig in the grass) and you really do not want to wear your expensive dress simply to sit on a wooden bench that can damage your dress.

I had a couple of options but the winner was a cute polka-dot red and cream colored knee length dress.  I have to say at first I wasn’t too convinced with the color scheme but in the end I was very happy with the way I wore the dress.  I added a handmade gold chain link bracelet and a set of red and white polka dot bracelets.  To make the look a little more “vintage” I wore some low heel mary jane styled shoe.  I was able to move around comfortably (sit, stand, chase after my 3 year old nephew) with no problems.  Remember you can still look cute without sacrificing comfort.  All in all I has a blast with the ones I love and I’m grateful I was able to partake in my nephews bday celebration of life.

summer daze

for these summer daze-keep it light!  This jean bustier dress is perfect for this crazy heat!  Paired with some brown booties and ALL gold accessories (earrings, midi ring set, bangles set).  This look is a tab more casual so I wore it while running errands before my trip to San Francisco.  I felt comfy, casual and sexy 😉

This dress I don’t remember where I got it but I usually don’t pay more than $15 bucks for a summer dress.

short hair don’t care!

liberation

Throw back Thursday story:
I remember going to my parents home after a long & emotional day…with a brand new hair trimmer and I handed if it off to my sisters. Within minutes my long (mid-back) length hair was ALL gone!!
I’ve always been terrified of cutting my hair especially “boy” short because I have a round face. But after getting my hair professionally cut I was genuinely very happy with my new look. In fact ever since I’ve kept my hair shoulder length or shorter.
Now as women/girls having long hair signifies femininity and beauty to some, so having short short hair isn’t a gals first choice. Having undergone my transformation I feel like I let go of my fear of being “exposed,” meaning I could not hide behind my hair nor did my hair make me! Its crazy how it took a physical change to make me feel a sense of liberation and to allow me to love myself. Since then my fear for change has diminished, I embrace new things and change is good!! Often I try to remind myself of how I “survived” when I felt life had gotten super tough! So now when my family & friends ask for my opinion about a hair cut I ALWAYS say GO FOR IT!!! It will grow back.
In conclusion I encourage you to think about your fears and you’d be surprised to find out that what you really fear. Face your insecurities, deal with the emotions and let it go!! Happy Throw back Thursday!
besos,
B
